Two daughters of an Alzheimer’s patient have embarked on a year-long journey of discovery as they dip into their mother’s jewelry box for gems of a different kind. Syndicated columnist Barbara J. Feldman and her sister-in-law, photographer Shoey Sindel, are collaborating on this project in the hopes of bringing light to the darkness surrounding Alzheimer’s. My Mother’s Jewelry Box (http://mymothersjewelrybox.com) features the writer’s poignant expressions of a mother-daughter relationship interrupted, linked to the contents of an almost bottomless jewelry box. With photos of the jewelry, descriptions and heart-felt renderings of a sometimes difficult relationship, this blog details many aspects of lives touched by Alzheimer’s.
Besides featuring the experiences of the author, My Mother’s Jewelry Box invites submissions from others who may be going through similar trials. Sagas written about dealing with Alzheimer’s patients or family members suffering from dementia are welcome, as well as stories about jewelry or mother-daughter relationships or poignant accounts of caretaking senior parents. The blog will be a venue to express the sometimes tarnished family ties everyone experiences at one time or another.
Costume jewelry buffs will want to see the unique pieces featured. Photographs of the costume jewelry sparkle throughout the blog. My Mother’s Jewelry Box will feature two pieces from the collection every week for a year. The collaborators are shown wearing some of the jewelry. Ms. Feldman’s mother is also shown in her prime, proudly wearing the bold jewelry she collected over the course of her life.
Those enduring the role-reversal of caring for aged parents will appreciate the honest portrayal Mss. Feldman and Sindel present on My Mother’s Jewelry Box. While most of the jewelry may be costume, the blog entries are genuine. Ms. Feldman explain, “Rather than focus on our relationship directly, I’ll focus on my journey through her jewelry boxes. I’m expecting that I might end up in the same place, but without having to confront all the difficult issues head on.” My Mother’s Jewelry Box.com shines amidst the clutter of cyberspace with a clarity for struggling mother/daughter relationships.
